It’s an interesting and perhaps instructive exchange between these two people, particularly in light of Matt’s completely arbitrary and subjective standard for accepting and rejecting historical data.

Also, maybe someone can chime in on this, because I have NEVER heard of subjective vs. objective evidence before. What is an example of subjective evidence? I always thought evidence was just that – evidence. If inclined, please share your thoughts. Here are the videos:

Matt Dillahunty (co-host) is right about one thing, most Christians do point to the empty tomb to justify their belief in the Resurrection of Jesus, and that is not the strongest evidence. The empty tomb does not prove that Jesus was risen, it just proves that there is not a body in that particular tomb. There are many other lines of evidence that point to Jesus being resurrected, such as (1) his followers saw him post-mortem, (2) Paul was converted, and (3) James was converted. These three lines, along with others, not only point to the resurrection, but they also help to explain the empty tomb (not the other way around).

The caller cited an alternate explanation to the traditional resurrection story, and so does not refute that his followers thought they encountered a risen Jesus. They were just mistaken in who they encountered. There are a few things wrong with this explanation: (1) it doesn’t explain the conversion of Paul, (2) it doesn’t explain the conversion of James, (3) it doesn’t explain the willingness of his followers to be martyrs, (4) it doesn’t explain the empty tomb, and (5) there is no historical evidence given to back up the claim that this is true.
